Lake Malawi the third largest and second deepest freshwater lake in Africa with the most diverse species of fish in the entire world; Popularly coined as ”the Lake of stars” it is our main attraction to anyone visiting or passing through the Southern Malawi offering limitless watersport activities to enjoy along its expansive sandy beaches. Declared as a UNESCO World heritage Site in 1984 being of global importance for biodiversity and conservation due particularly to the diversity of its fish species, Lake Malawi National Park is arguably the most popular and well liked spot on the Lake.
A small fishing village on the southern shores of Lake Malawi located within the National Park is the hot spot for a broad range of activities for all ages. The crystal clear waters that surround the nearby Domwe, Thumbi and Mumbo Islands provide unique and private snorkeling and kayaking opportunities suitable for honeymoon couples and family groups alike. A walk through the park to Otters Point in the late afternoon will reveal the magic of the moment when the sun sets on the lake and turns the sky into gold.
A tour through Chambe Village gives you the opportunity to mingle with the natives who are always eager to please (if not to sell you a memento). The Gule wankulu “the big dance”, a common sight at the resorts, is authentic and so is the drum rhythm and songs they dance to. The “beasts” take pride in showing off their colorful and meticulously crafted attire and masks.
Both camping and lodge accommodation is usually arranged at beach front resorts with direct access to the lakes sandy beaches. Thumbi View Lodge is our favorite hub where the views over the lake and nearby island is undeniably splendid and the food is made taking special care to incorporate your individual taste/ liking. A Private cottage can also be arranged for groups that prefer to self-cater.
